Visit Varberg

A day in Halland

Beaches

The closest beach, called Kagabäcken, is 200 meters to the right on the sand road. At the fishing harbor in central Träslövsläge (called “Läjet” by locals) there is another longer sandy beach.

A few kilometers south you will find Björkäng sea bath (long sandy beach and camping + restaurant) and a few kilometers north is Apelviken, one of Halland's most wellknown beaches.

Lilla Apelviken, also known as Kåsa, is a nice sandy beach located at Varbergs Kusthotell. There is both a sandy beach and rocks. At Kallbadhuset and Varberg’s Fortress you will find Barnens badstrand (the children's beach).

Getterön with its’ five bays is north of Varberg. The most popular ones are the 1st and 5th bay (sandy beaches and rocks).

South of the fortress, on the seafront, lies Simstadion with heated outdoor pools.

Visit the official beach guide for more information.

Surfing

Varbergs is known as ‘Sweden's surfing city’. At Apelviken it’s possible to take different kinds of surfing classes and to hire all necessary equipment. For more information, see Surfers Paradise or Fahléns Surf

SPA

Besides surfing, Varberg is known as a historical seaside health resort with several spa hotels. The most popluar ones are Varbergs Kusthotell (at Kåsa), Asia Spa (Varbergs stadshotell) and Sinnenas spa at Ästad Vineyard. Hotel Havanna and Hotel Gästis are also well worth a visit. You can visit the spas without booking an overnight stay – perfect for a rainy day!

Museum

A visit to Varberg Fortress, built in the 13th century, is a must. There is also Halland County Museum

Öströö Sheep farm is a nice retreat in Dagsås, in the middle of the forests.

Gamla Köpstad Nature Reserve is located right on the beach and the forest and extends far south and a bit north. There are many nice walks with a chance to see ancient remains.

HERE you will find more tips on experiences in Varberg with surroundings.

Shopping

Every Wednesday and Saturday from early morning until about 2 pm there is a traditional market on Varbergs town square. In the center you will find many small, charming shops as well as several retail chains.

Other information

Don’t miss to visit the charming old part of Läjet! It's about 1 km away. There you will find ‘Tre Toppar’, a well-known ice cream café with home-made waffles, open during the summer season. If you walk or go by bike, the fastest route is to follow the sand road to the beach and then take right. Continue towards the church. Then follow the road to the fishing harbor. You can also walk along a nice lane along the cape straight ahead after Kagabäcken bay.

Close to the fishing harbour you will find Läjets Fisk (fresh fish and seafood store, open Tuesday-Saturday) as well as Kräftvagnen, selling fresh crayfish during the summer Friday-Saturday.

There is a nice restaurant called Joels Brygga at the marina. If you follow the beach a bit north, about 5 minutes, you will find Läjets bar & pizzeria which is open the year around and also offers home delivery.

Another popular excursion is Johnssons Gård, a country mall with cafés and farm shops in Vare, a few kilometers east.

City Transportation

There is a bus leaving for Varberg city centre 2-4 times per hour (day and evening). The nearest bus stop is ‘Storgatan’, about 300 meters from the cottage. Turn left at the mailboxes and follow the road Hajvägen until you reach a small roundabout. From there you will see the stop. For timetables, see below or download the ‘Hallandstrafiken’ app, where you also can buy your ticket. On the bus it’s only possible to pay with bank card.

From Varberg, there is a train to Gothenburg (about 40 min), Malmö-Copenhagen and Borås. Öresundtåg operates Gothenburg-Copenhagen and Viskadalsbanan operates the train to Borås. Tickets for the trains are most easily purchased via the Hallandstrafiken app. Tickets for Öresundståg are also available in their ticket machines at the station. Remember to buy a ticket all the way from Träslövsläge to the final destination, eg. Gothenburg, in the app, since the bus trip then is included in the same price as the train ticket.
